Last week, during National Volunteer Appreciation Week, we were thrilled to once again welcome community volunteers back to the landscapes and nursery. This comes after our Arboretum and Public Garden volunteer program was put on hiatus over a year ago due to pandemic-related campus health and safety restrictions.

The Friends of the UC Davis Arboretum and Public Garden—our community support group celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2021—has been a tremendous partner in fostering the excellence of our gardens, programs, staff and students. Would you or someone you know be interested in doing more for the Friends?
On the south side of Lake Spafford, nestled among heritage trees and a sprawling California buckeye, sits a unique, multi-tiered deck constructed from redwood to honor the grove nearby. The open-air location, enjoyed by thousands every year, retains a history with an extended local family – the Unger-Yackzans.
This month, we extend special thanks to our friends and fans in Yolo County who recently named the UC Davis Arboretum and Public Garden as the best "Shelter-at-Home Escape" and the "Best Place to Take an Out-of-Towner" in the Davis Enterprise "Best of Yolo" voting.
The project to replace the over 50-year-old Wyatt Deck begins this spring with demolition of the two lower wooden decks set for early spring and the rebuilt deck slated to re-open by winter 2022. The La Rue Bridge replacement project and 2-year detour around the bridge is officially over, with the paths in the Arboretum now open to the public just in time for scenic strolls and holiday hikes. Over the past couple of years, the expansive project required pedestrians, bikers, and cars to maneuver around the construction via detours while the Arboretum walkways under and near the bridge were closed.
Thank you to those who have supported us by shopping our online plant sale with curbside pickup. So far, the online sale has been very successful! We are especially grateful for all who are shopping, as we lost the revenue of our entire spring plant sale season due to the pandemic.
